Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Margaret Whitwam was born in 1852 in Leeds, England – the daughter of Abraham Whitwam, a shoemaker, and Rosette Smith.
She married George Clough, a chemist’s assistant, in 1880 and they had three daughters.
In 1890 the family emigrated to New Zealand in 1890 on the Doric and settled in Dunedin.
When Margaret signed the suffrage petition they were living near her sister Rosetta (See 163 Rosetta Rhodes) in Selwyn, North East Valley.
Margaret died at her home on 2 August 1913 and George died in 1925 in Invercargill – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
