Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Marion Nelson Spowart was born on 23 March 1861 in Inveresk, Midlothian in Scotland – the daughter of John Spowart, a miner, and Helen Sim.

She emigrated to Bluff with her family in 1874 on the “Waitara” and she married Samuel Collett in 1880.

They had five children and when Marion signed the suffrage petition they were living in Gore where Samuel worked as a coachbuilder.

They lost one son in WW1 and their only daughter died in 1918 during the influenza epidemic.

Marion died on 8 March 1925 and Samuel died the following year – they are buried together in the Gore Cemetery.
