Mary Bone Whitelaw was born in 1863 in New Zealand – the daughter of Peter Whitelaw and Agnes Kelly.
She married compositor William Henry Clemtree Dixon in 1887 and they had six children, one who died in infancy.
When Mary signed the suffrage petition in Serpentine Avenue the family were living in, nearby, Maclaggan Street.
They later moved to Gore then to Balclutha.
Mary died at their home on 1 August 1915 and William died in 1927 when he was gored by a bull.
They are buried together in the Old Balclutha cemetery.
