Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Mary Ann Brunton was born on 22 December 1855 in Liberton, Edinburghshire, Scotland – the daughter of David Brunton, a builder, and Elizabeth Oliver.
Three years later she emigrated to Otago with her family on the Mariner and settled in Dunedin.
The family later lived in Merton where they had a farm.
Mary married David Campbell Dunbar on 10 May 1877 in the Merton parish. They had six children and when Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Hampden in North Otago running a store.
Mary died at her home on 30 November 1935. Her obituary said 'essentially a lover of home, Mrs Dunbar’s first concern was the family life, but she had many other interests, none greater than the work of the Hampden Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the P.W.M.U., and for 34 years secretary and treasurer of the guild. Mrs Dunbar was a very kind and sympathetic woman, and as a diploma member of the St. John Ambulance Association, her services were often sought after, and were freely given in time of sickness.'
David died in 1938, he is buried with Mary in the Hampden Cemetery.
