Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Mary Ellen McLauchlin was born in 1863 in Victoria, Australia – the daughter of John McLauchlin and Mary McLean.
She married bootmaker August Dickel in Victoria in 1889 and by the time that Mary signed the suffrage petition they had moved to August’s native Dunedin and were living with his family in Serpentine Avenue.
They later moved to Wellington where August died in 1912 and Mary died on 17 May 1943 – they are both buried in the Karori Cemetery.
