Mary Elizabeth Hutchinson was born on 27 October 1856 in Hobart, Tasmania – the daughter of John Thomas Hutchinson, an accountant, and Lydia Ann McClean.
Mary did not marry. When she signed the suffrage petition Mary was living with her widowed brother and his family in Frederick St, Dunedin. When her brother died in 1916 Mary was appointed trustee and executor of his estate, and also guardian of his 15 year old daughter Thelma.
Thelma married in 1928 in Sydney, Australia.
Mary died in Parkville, Victoria on 28 July, 1940. Her death notice says “she was the last surviving granddaughter of the late Rev. John Hutchinson and Rev. Robert McClean MA, great granddaughter of Mrs Mary Oates, Australia’s first white child.”
