Mary Edmond McSweeney was born about 1865 in Culin, County Cork, Ireland.

She emigrated to New Zealand in the late 1870s and married Frederick William Wedlake, a miner, in 1886.

They had two children and when Mary signed the suffrage petition they were living in Forth St, Dunedin.

Frederick died at their home in 1911 and Mary died 17 May 1928, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
