Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Alice Mary Landells was born in 1860 in Gateshead, Durham – the daughter of Sibbert Landells, a glass mould manufacturer, and Elizabeth Foreman.
The family came to New Zealand in the 1870s. Her father died in Dunedin in 1880.
Alice married Maxwell Instone Maxwell, a draper, in 1884, and they had four children. Their first daughter died in infancy. Alice and her youngest son Freddy died in November 1894 when the steamer Wairarapa was wrecked on rocks near Great Barrier Island while returning from Sydney.
Alice’s husband remarried in 1897 to Euphemia Jane Given.
