Mary Gilchrist Henderson was born in 1862 in New Zealand – the daughter of William Henderson and Annie Smith.

When Mary signed the suffrage petition she was living in George St, Dunedin.

Mary married John Campbell, a widower and cooper, in 1897 and they had three daughters.

John died at the Dunedin Hospital in 1903 leaving Mary with three very young children.

Mary died at her home in Arthur St, Dunedin on 21 September 1922, she is buried with John in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
