Margaret Henderson Begg was born in 1857 in the Romahapa district – the daughter of Alexander Sutherland Begg, a saw and flour mill owner, and Jane Mary Traill Calder.
When Margaret signed the suffrage petition she was living at Romahapa, her occupation in the electoral roll was given as 'Lady'.
She married John Alexander Henderson, a farmer, on 14 February 1894 and they had four daughters.
The year that their youngest daughter was born John died, aged 39, at their home Landsdowne, Romahapa.
Margaret moved to Dunedin in the mid-1900s, she died there on 1 January 1916 and is buried with John in the Romahapa Cemetery.
