Margaret Helena Comyn was born in 1861 in Victoria, Australia – the eldest child of George William Comyn, a police constable and Catherine Killeen.
Around 1865 she sailed for Otago with her family and they lived in Dunedin, Waipori, Tokomairiri, Cromwell, Cardrona, Havelock and Waitahuna before returning to Dunedin when her father retired from the police force.
Her mother died in 1879 and her father died in 1886.
When Margaret signed the suffrage petition she was living with her sister in Cargill Road, South Dunedin working as a dressmaker.
Margaret died on 18 June 1896 – she is buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
