Mary Ann Helen McHutcheson was born on 25 May 1854 in Bute, Rothesay, Scotland – the daughter of William McHutcheson, an excise officer, and Isabella Philip. (See 301 Isabella McHutcheson)
She came to New Zealand with her family in early 1860s and she married Rev William Nichol on 27 August 1886 at her parents’ home in Oamaru.
They had four children and they moved to Hampden, where Mary signed the suffrage petition, in 1889.
In later life they moved to Auckland where William died in 1922, he is buried in the Waikumete Cemetery.
Mary died at Waimate on 30 December 1953, she is buried with her two sons in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin.
