Minnie Hartley, born in 1870 was the daughter of Elizabeth and Joshua Hartley.
Minnie Hartley had attended Turua Primary School and in 1880 won the Standard III first prize.
Minnie Hartley signed page 408 of the 1892 suffrage petition and her mother Eliz Hartley also signed sheet 390.
On sheet 390 W. McCarthny – Turua is stamped and has been crossed out; could this have been Minnie’s future husband William McIntyre McCarthny?
Minnie and William McCarthny married on 24 August 1894, the wedding was described as being between two of Turua’s most respected residents. The couple were married by the Rev, Mr Olphert of Thames and the happy couple left for Auckland, per Paeroa amidst a shower of rice and old boots, and the happy congratulations of a large assemblage of friends.
The 1896 Ohinemuri electoral roll records Minnie Hartley as living in Turua and domestic duties as her occupation.
Minnie and William had six children, Sydney, Dulcibel, Rita, Cora, Percy and Vera. Sydney Carlton McCarthny, their eldest son died in France in WWI from wounds in August 1916, he was 21.
William died in 1917 and Minnie relocated to Auckland, on the 1928 Grey Lyn, Auckland electoral roll she was living at 7 Richmond Street with her son Percy and daughter Rita. Minnie died at 7 Richmond Street on 12 July 1931, she was 60-years-old and is buried at Hillsborough Cemetery, Auckland.
