Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Hay was born in 1871 in Dunedin – the daughter of William Hay, a compositor, and Mary Robertson nee Grierson, a widow.

The family moved to Lyttleton in the early 1880s where her father died suddenly in 1888 from a paralytic stroke, he was 48.

Mary moved back to Dunedin with her mother and when she signed the suffrage petition they were living in York Place and Mary was working as a tailoress.

Her mother died in 1909 and, in 1911, Mary married Isaac Parish, a widower with several children. They lived at Burwood in Canterbury.

Isaac died in 1921 and Mary later moved to Christchurch where she died on 16 March 1958. She is presumably buried in Christchurch.
