Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Mackenzie was born about 1848 in Scotland – the daughter of Robert Mackenzie.

She married Tertius Hay MacKenzie on 4 March 1870 at the Commercial Hotel, Bonar Bridge.

Soon after their marriage they emigrated to New Zealand and had seven children.

The family lived in Oamaru then Moeraki where Tertius was declared bankrupt in 1877.

Tertius worked as a stationmaster at Palmerston, Lumsden and Stirling before moving to Bluff where Margaret signed the suffrage petition.

In 1897 Tertius was transferred to Westport – he died there in 1906 and is buried in the Orowati Cemetery.

Margaret moved to Wellington where she died on 7 July 1919, she is buried in the Karori Cemetery.

Her obituary said she 'was a very estimable lady, whose death will be regretted by a large circle of friends.'
