Mary Ann Whiting was born about 1848 in England, she emigrated to New Zealand about 1873.

In 1884 Mary married Benjamin Joseph Hill, an expressman and widower with three children.

Mary and Benjamin had four children together and when Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Smith St, Caversham, Dunedin.

Benjamin died in 1896, he is buried in the Hill family grave in the Southern Cemetery.

Mary remained in Caversham and she died on 16 October 1933, she is buried with her son in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
