Originally transcribed as M. C. Hopkins
Biographical information provided by Briar Barry for the He Tohu exhibition:
This entry has been transcribed as M.C. Hopkins but it appears to be M.A. Hopkins. If so this would have been Mary Ann Hopkins. She was married to Edwards Hopkins, a storekeeper in Greymouth.
In 1930 Mary Ann donated a section of land to the Greymouth Borough Council, which became Hopkins Park.
Mary Ann died on 21 July 1941 and is buried in Greymouth with her husband.
Additional biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Mary Ann Panckhurst was born in 1861 in New Zealand – the eldest daughter of David Panckhurst, a miner, and Mary Ann McKinlay. (See 246 M Panckhurst)
Mary married Edward Hopkins in 1878 and they had 14 children, three who died in infancy or early childhood.
Mary signed the suffrage petition in Greymouth.
Edward died in 1921 and Mary died on 26 July 1941 – they are buried together in the Karoro Cemetery.
