Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Isabella Warnock was born about 1841 in Armagh, Ireland- the daughter of John Warnock.

She came to New Zealand about 1861 and married Joseph Longhurst Gregory, a lithographer, on 27 May 1864 in Dunedin.

They had seven children and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Duncan St.

Joseph died at his home in 1904 and Margaret died on 10 November 1928, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.

Additional information provided by Warren Gregory (great great grandson)

Margaret's signature is placed in between others who listed their address as Elm Row.  Although Margaret and her family lived in Duncan Street, she had a shop in Elm Row.

Someone calling door to door for signatures may have stopped at her shop while working their way along the homes in Elm Row.

The maps of the time also show a lane between the back of the Duncan St houses and Elm Row that she may have used to walk to work.

Photograph of Margaret which was taken by Denslow Royal Gallery, Princes St, Dunedin.

Photographer J W Denslow only had a business in Dunedin for about two years,  from 1864 to 1866.  The photo is undated but it would have been taken during that period.  She would have been about 23 years old.
