Margaret Jane Campbell was born about 1850 in Rothesay, Scotland – the daughter of John Campbell, a builder, and Elizabeth Jamieson.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in the early 1860s, possibly on the Aboukir and they lived in Halfway Bush in Dunedin.
Margaret married, teacher, William Anderson on 3 January 1872 at the Dunedin Registrar’s Office.
They had five children, one who was stillborn, and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family was living in Castle Street.
William died in 1915 – he is buried in the Northern Cemetery.
In later years Margaret lived with her son in Palmerston North before moving to Christchurch to live with her daughter.
She died at her daughter’s home on 29 December 1940 – she is also buried in the Northern Cemetery.
