Marie Johane Jenson was born about 1861 in Denmark.

She came to New Zealand where she married Captain Peter Andrew Lyders, a master mariner also from Denmark, on August 7th 1878 in Dunedin.

They had 7 children, the eldest who died in infancy, and when Marie signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Maryhill Terrace, Mornington.

Peter gave up the sea for a mining venture in the 1890s before becoming a building contractor.

He died in 1924 & Marie died at her home on March 5th 1926. They are buried in the Southern Cemetery.
