Mary Jane Homan was born about 1835 in England – the daughter of Hannah Homan. 

She emigrated to Otago in the 1860s with her mother and brother and settled in Dunedin. 

Mary married John Prosser, a hotel keeper and widower with a daughter, on 21 May 1870 in the Glasgow Arms Hotel in Dunedin. 

John died in 1875 – he is buried in the Hampden Cemetery. 

When Mary signed the suffrage petition she was living in Hanover St, Dunedin. 

She died on 9 August 1907 and is buried with her mother and brother in the Southern Cemetery.
