Mary Jones was born about 1865 in New Zealand – the daughter of Thomas Jones, the caretaker of Arthur Street School, and Mary Ann.
Mary spent her early years in Wellington before moving to Dunedin with her family.
Her mother died in 1885 and when Mary signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Arthur St working as a tailoress.
Her father died in 1905 – Mary’s life after this is unknown.
