Biographical information submitted by Robbie Tichener:

Maude Laura Mason was born in London, England in 1850, possibly the illegitimate daughter of Phoebe Jenkyns and an unlisted father.

She doesn't seem to be listed on the ship's register, but Maude probably came to NZ in 1869 on the ship Hydaspes with her mother (who served as ship's Matron) and two sisters.

Maude originally helped her mother run a boarding house in Christchurch, but in 1876, she married Thomas Abbott, a gardener, and they would have four children. One of her daughters was renowned artist, Annie Elizabeth Kelly.

Maude died in 1922.
