Mary Nicol was born in New Zealand in 1853 – the daughter of Charles Nicol, a baker for the 65th Regiment, and Catherine Jane Murray.
She married Thomas Stoddart Lambert in 1871 and they had 12 children, two who died in infancy.
The family lived in Marton then Wanganui where Thomas was declared bankrupt in 1873.
They later moved to Christchurch then to Dunedin where Mary signed the suffrage petition.
In the 1890s the family shifted to Wellington where Thomas died in 1917.
Mary died at Wellington Hospital on 24 September 1926, they are buried together in the Karori Cemetery.
