Margaret Elizabeth Ashmore was born on 2 December 1851 in Adelaide, South Australia – the daughter of William Ashmore, a gold miner, and Mary Alcock.
The family spent time in Victoria before moving to Otago in the early 1850s.
Margaret married Alexander Lockhart in 1873 and they had five children, one who died in infancy.
When Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Milton.
She died on 14 May 1914 when she fell under the evening train as it arrived at the station.
Alexander died in 1925, they are buried in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.
