Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Marion Smith was born in 1870 in New Zealand – the daughter of Arthur Gustavus Smith, a farmer, and Annie Northcroft.

She married Frederick Wilhelm Lyders, a building contractor, on August 6th 1892 in Dunedin and when she signed the suffrage petition they were living in Cumberland Street.

They had 10 children, one who died in infancy.

Frederick gave up building and took up farming in the 1910s until he “was unfortunate enough to have his right hand severed in a chaff cutter”.

Frederick died at their home in 1937 and Marion died on March 18th 1963. They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
