Margaret Marshall Smaill was born in 1856 in New Zealand -  the daughter of William Alexander, a shoemaker, and Janet Brown Ross.

Margaret married William Smaill, a farmer, on 10 February 1880 in the Stirling Parish and they had six children.

When Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living at their farm 'Hawthornden' near Kaitangata.

William died at their home in 1929 and Margaret died on 10 June 1934, they are both buried in the Kaitangata Northern Cemetery.
