Margaret McMullin was born about 1861 in Ireland – the daughter of Archibald McMullin, a farmer, and Bridget McGill.
She emigrated to New Zealand about 1882 and married Henry McCarthy, a fireman, in Dunedin 1885.
They had four children and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Leith Street.
Margaret died at the Dunedin Hospital on 24 April 1911 and Henry died in 1922, they are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
