Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Martha was born about 1841 and was married to John George McIntosh, a draper.

She was possibly the Martha Bunn who married in Birmingham in 1872.

Martha and John emigrated to Canterbury in 1875 on the Waimate and they had five daughters.

John was declard bankrupt in 1882 and when Martha signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Maori Hill in Dunedin.

They moved to Christchurch in the mid-1890s and, in 1901, John was sentenced to two months in prison for disobeying a maintenance order.

In 1902 John pleaded not guilty to the same charge – he proved that he was unable to pay and the order was reduced.

Martha died at her home in Christchurch on 26 May 1915 and she is buried in the Linwood Cemetery.

What happened to John is unclear.
