Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Marion Cross was born on 13 July 1856 in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland – the daughter of George Cross, a seaman, and Jane Hay.
She emigrated to New Zealand with her family in the 1860s and she married James McNeill, a blacksmith, on 10 October 1877.
They had three children and when Marion signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Maori Hill, Dunedin.
James died in 1917 and Marion died at her home on 7 January 1947 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
