Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Mary Elder was born about 1832 in Edinburgh, Scotland – the daughter of Thomas Elder, a shoe maker, and Catherine.
She married James Douglas Moultray, a journeyman gilder – later an accomplished landscape painter – on 29 July 1853 in Edinburgh. They had seven children, three of whom died in childhood; another two daughters died in their teens and early twenties.
Mary and James, with their two remaining sons, emigrated to Otago on the Helen Denny in 1883 and settled in Dunedin. The family lived in Heriot Row where James died in March 1911.
Mary died three months later on 4 June. They are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
