This is likely the signature of Mary Mant Miller, born Mary Ann Edser in 1859 in London, the eldest child of Alfred Edser and Amy Skeggs. She migrated to New Zealand at some point before 1877, the year of her marriage to Richard Mant Miller, a soldier in the British Army who had arrived in New Zealand in 1874.
The pair had five daughters. One, Laura, died as a baby. The family settled in Hawke’s Bay.
Mary was widowed in 1904. She lived in Waipawa in her later life, and was living in Waipukurau at the time of her death in 1935.
