Mary Ann Mason was born about 1855 in Leeds, Yorkshire.
She emigrated to Otago in 1880 on the Canterbury and she married Thomas Newell, a gardener, in 1882.
They had two children and when Mary signed the suffrage petition they were living in Andersons Bay, Dunedin.
Thomas died in 1922 and Mary died at her home on 25 February 1937 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
