Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Maud Penaliffe Wiggins was born in 1869 in New Zealand – the daughter of William Wiggins, a saddler, and Maria Elliott.

She grew up in Wellington where she married Rev James Gates Chapman, a Wesleyan minister, in April 1893.

They lived, at first, in Milton where Maud signed the suffrage petition, and they had three children.

They later lived at Balclutha, Auckland, Wanganui, New Plymouth and Wellington where James retired in 1920.

He died in 1925 and Maud died on 4 August 1935, they are buried together in the Karori Cemetery.
