Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Johanna Margaret/Maggie Paaskeson was born in 1871 in New Zealand – the daughter of Soren Paaskeson, a miner and farmer, and Anna Christina.

When Maggie signed the suffrage petition she was living in Waitahuna, Otago.

She married Archibald Edwards Bateman, a farmer, on 12 May 1897, at the Oddfellows Hall, Waitahuna.

Both members of the Salvation Army 'the bride and bridegroom were dressed in ordinary Army dress, the bride having a white sash with the letters Emmanual on it'.

They had three children and they celebrated their silver wedding anniversary in 1922 while living at Hillcrest Farm, Waitahuna.

By the time they celebrated their golden wedding in 1947 they were living in Dunedin.

Archibald died that year and Maggie died on 5 March 1954, they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
