Margaret Kay was born about 1850 in Scotland.
She married David Paterson, a carpenter, on 4 August 1874 and they had three children, one who died in infancy.
In November 1878 they boarded the “Taranaki” bound for Otago. They settled in Dunedin where they had a further three children.
When Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Manse St, Kaikorai.
In later life they moved to Petone, Wellington where Margaret died on 19 January 1922 and David died in 1932.
They are buried together in the Taita Old Cemetery.
