Margaret Bicket McLaren was born on 18 January 1862 in Glasgow, Scotland. She was the daughter of James McLaren and Mary Boyd.

Margaret arrived in New Zealand with her family in about 1864 and married James Colin Ross, a hat manufacturer, in 1892.

In 1893 they were living on the corner of High and Tweed Streets in Roslyn, Dunedin. They had two children.

James died in 1914 and Margaret died on 10 May 1927. She is buried in the Northern Cemetery with her husband and parents.
