Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Shand Todd was born in 1859  in East Taieri – the daughter of Charles Todd, a storekeeper, and Margaret Shand. (See 136 Margaret A Todd)

She married Samuel Young, a storekeeper, on 20 October 1880 in the Warepa/Kaihiku Parish in South Otago - they had 12 children and lived in Owaka where Margaret signed the suffrage petition.

In the 1900s the family moved to Tuapeka West and started farming.

Samuel died at their home 'Heathcote' in 1926 and Margaret died on 18 May 1936, they are buried together in the Lawrence Cemetery.

Margaret’s obituary said she was a 'highly respected woman' and 'of a kindly disposition and was a loyal supporter of the Presbyterian Church'.
