Biographical information provided by Fiona Oliver for the He Tohu exhibition:
Mrs M. A. Sharland owned a busy and successful corset shop at 236 Colombo Street, Christchurch. It was in business from at least 1882. Later, Mrs Sharland advertised a range of other goods for sale: ‘a large variety of mechanical toys’, Christmas and New Year’s cards ‘not two alike’, and ‘dolls and other goods slightly damaged by the storm’. She also regularly sought to take on a girl or boy for assistance. By 1902 she had relocated to Armagh Street, and the shop became a butcher’s.
