Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Symes was born in 1870 in New Zealand – the daughter of Robert Symes, a miner, and Elizabeth Henderson.

When Margaret signed the suffrage petition she was living at Blue Spur near Lawrence.

On 2 November 1910, at the age of 39, Margaret married Richard Bailoni, a labourer, at Waitahuna Gully.

They lived in Gore, Southland before Richard died in 1922, in Dunedin.

Margaret re-married the following year to James Jones – she died on 9 January 1954 and is buried with Richard in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
