Margaret Kane was born in Scotland about 1858 – daughter of David Kane and Janet Kerr.
Margaret emigrated to Otago and, in 1882, she married John Urquhart, a carpenter for the railways. They had four children when John died by being run over by a shunting train while at work. Margaret was pregnant at the time and the child was born the next year.
Margaret worked as a storekeeper in the 1890s. She died on 22 June 1945 at Middlemarch. She is buried with John in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.
