Mabel Williams was born in 1870 in New Zealand, daughter of Joseph and Susan Williams.

She married James Smeaton, a blacksmith, in 1889 and they had four children.

When she signed the suffrage petition Mabel was living with her family in Castle St, Dunedin.

They later lived in Cumberland St and then Hanover St where Mabel died on 5 January 1909.

James died in 1919 in Invercargill. They are buried together in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin.
