Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Ann Simpson was born in 1872 in New Zealand – the daughter of Richard Sellars Simpson, a contractor and farmer, and Eliza Barclay.

She married farmer James Robert Anderson in 1890 and they lived at Charlton, near Gore, where Margaret signed the suffrage petition.

They had three children before James died in 1901 – he is buried in the Mataura Cemetery.

After James’ death Margaret and the children went to live at Port Chalmers.

She later lived in Mataura and Christchurch with her youngest daughter Mabel, a teacher.

Margaret died on 7 October 1957 at Ranfurly while visiting her daughter Evangeline – she is buried in the Ranfurly Cemetery.
