Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Maggie/Margaret Bell was born on 10 December 1858 in Killean & Kilchenzie, Argyll, Scotland – the daughter of Duncan Bell, a wool and cotton weaver, and Jane Matheson.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in the mid 1860s and they lived, at first, on the Maniototo Plains where her father worked as a shepherd before they moved to a farm at Whare Flat near Dunedin.

Maggie married printer George Terry on 15 November 1878 at St Matthew’s Church. They had three children before George died in 1885 – he is buried in the Northern Cemetery.

Maggie re-married on 24 November 1886 to William Blackburn Buddicom, a widower and tram driver.

They had six children together and when Maggie signed the suffrage petition she was living in Edwin St, Caversham.

In 1905 William was charged with 'failing to provide his wife and children with adequate means of maintenance.' After the case went to court 'a home was offered' – the case was dismissed.

In 1909 William was charged with 'desertion and failing to provide for his illegitimate child' – he was remanded to Palmerston North.

William died in 1914 – he is buried with his first wife in the Southern Cemetery.

Maggie died on 20 April 1937 in Dunedin – she is buried with her daughter in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
