Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Margaret Haig was born about 1843. Her ‘husband’ was known as George Charles Graham.
George started his life as Charles Brown and all of their eight childrens’ births were registered under the name of Brown.
The family lived in Milton in South Otago where George worked as a coachbuilder and where Margaret signed the suffrage petition.
In January 1896 Margaret was living in Dunedin with their 16-year-old son who was an invalid.
She was badly burned when her apron caught fire and she died several days later on 29 January.
Her obituary said she was 'much respected by all who knew her.'
George died in 1913 – they are both buried in the Milton Cemetery.
