Maggie Edith Jago was born in 1866 in New Zealand - the daughter of John Wesley Jago, the manager of the Evening Star newspaper, and Margaret Pollock Mackie.

When she signed the suffrage petition she was living at the family home in Leith St, Dunedin.

She married at her home on 18 December 1895, her husband was James Waddell Smith, the headmaster of High Street School.

Maggie and James did not have children.

James died in 1933 and Maggie died on 17 March 1945. They are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
