Margaret/Maggie McAlister was born on 29 July 1867 in Dunedin – the daughter of Captain John McAlister, a master mariner, and Margaret Anderson.

Her father died in 1883 and her mother died in 1890.

When Maggie signed the suffrage petition she was living with her brother in the family home in St David Street working as a tailoress.

What happened to Maggie after she signed the suffrage petition is unclear.
