Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Margaret Hunter was born about 1845 in Bellshill, Lanarkshire, Scotland – the daughter of George Hunter and Agnes Davidson.
She emigrated to Otago in 1870 and she married James McNeur, a school teacher, on 29 March 1872 at Southbridge, Tokomairiro.
They had seven children – the family lived at Te Houka then Inch Clutha where, in 1878, their school was washed away by a large flood.
They later moved to Port Molyneux where Margaret signed the suffrage petition.
When James retired from teaching the family bought a farm near Clinton.
Margaret died at their home 'Parklea' near Clinton on 21 June 1909.
Her obituary said she 'was more given to deeds than words, although she conversed brightly upon her favourite subject – the work of God. In practical Christianity her heart was warm and her hand ready; and many outside her home circle have had reason to bless her for the loving help she readily rendered.'
James later moved to Dunedin where he died in 1913, they are buried together in the Balclutha Old Cemetery.
