Jane Ferguson Andrews Reid, also known as Margaret Jane, was born on 17 June 1850 in Maybole, Ayrshire – the daughter of James Hamilton Reid, a district road surveyor, and Margaret Crawford.
She emigrated to New Zealand where she supposedly married Andrew Neilson in 1884 – there is no record of this marriage.
They had seven children and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition they were living in Gore where Andrew worked as a cordial manufacturer.
Andrew died in 1922 and Margaret re-married in 1926 to John Hugh Hunt.
She died on 19 August 1931 and is buried with Andrew in the Gore Cemetery.
