Mahala Eliza Davie was born in 1870 in Hobart, Tasmania – the daughter of George Davie and Maria Lydia Page. She came to New Zealand with her family in the 1870’s and when she signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Stuart St, Dunedin working as a weaver. Mahala married, watchmaker, William Charles Crane on 15 February 1894 at St Paul’s Church in Dunedin. They had five children and they moved to Wellington in 1906. William died in 1943 and Mahala died on 21 February 1962 – they are buried together in the Karori Cemetery.
